Failing forward: The secret to success

22-Sep-2025

Nicola Tarr, managing partner

In both personal and professional growth, there’s a powerful notion that stands out: fail forward. It’s a concept I preach, because I’ve seen firsthand the incredible benefits it offers. Rather than seeing failure as a setback, fail forward redefines it as an opportunity for learning and growth.

I’m where I am today because I’ve never been afraid to try something new, to step out of my comfort zone and pursue unfamiliar paths, knowing that it’s the right direction even if the outcome is uncertain.

I’ve failed more than once through this journey, but each failure has offered an incredible lesson, allowing me to analyse, tweak and improve. And with every failure, I’ve become better; my clients have seen the benefits and, as a result, my company has thrived.

With so much change and uncertainty around us, the need to fail forward has never been more critical. If you want to stay relevant, stand above the crowd, or push the boundaries of what’s possible, you have to try new things. You must embrace the unknown, because it’s in these moments of experimentation and (cautious) risk-taking that true growth happens.

That being said, it takes bravery to embrace this mindset, and the key is to surround yourself with people who create space for you to fail, learn and grow. In a supportive environment, failure is not something to be feared, but something to be celebrated for the lessons it brings.

When you’re surrounded by those who allow you the freedom to try, experiment, fail and rise again, not leaping would be a missed opportunity. Growth doesn’t come from playing it safe; it comes from pushing boundaries, making mistakes and learning what works and what doesn’t.

In times of constant change, those who refuse to stand still, who embrace the challenge of failure, are the ones who rise above. If you want to keep evolving, staying relevant and continue to move forward, you have to be willing to fail, because, in the end, failing forward is the secret to becoming better, stronger and more resilient.
